The Department of Mechanical Engineering has started in the year 2008 with an intake of 60 students; later in 2014 the intake is increased to 120 students. In the year 2014 Started M. Tech program in Thermal Power Engineering. Further department received VTU approval in 2017 to start Research Center to fulfill the growing needs of research activities. The Department has faculty strength of 01 Professors, 02 Associate Professor, 18 Assistant Professor and 06 faculty members are pursuing PhD, The Department has “add-on courses” taught by Industry experts. The department is committed to continuously improve the quality of education by enhancing the knowledge of students and staff members by organizing various relevant programs. It has well equipped laboratories having the latest configurations and software tools. Department has an association of students named ARMES (Association of Royal Mechanical Engineering Students) which organizes value added programs in social, moral & technical fields to boost overall development of the students. The department has initiated consultancy services in material testing, fuel property, performance testing and design field. Signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU’s) with Reputed Industries.

Why Mechanical Engineering in SGBIT..?


Mechanical Engineering is the discipline that applies engineering, physics, engineering mathematics, and materials science principles to design, analyze, manufacture, and maintain mechanical systems. It is one of the oldest and broadest of the engineering disciplines. The mechanical engineering field requires an understanding of core areas including mechanics, dynamics, thermodynamics, materials science, structural analysis, and electricity. In addition to these core principles, mechanical engineers use tools such as computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), and product life cycle management to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others. It is the branch of engineering that involves the design, production, and operation of machinery.

The Scope Of Mechanical Engineers ..?


Mechanical engineers Designs and produces new or improved products. Work in research labs, the military, air force, navy and in other professions such as medicine, law or teaching and competitive exams.
Major area of employment for mechanical engineers is manufacturing, which cover nearly everything involved in developing a product, from selecting the appropriate materials to choosing the correct machinery to manufacture the product.
In this industry work for equipment manufacturers, aerospace companies, utilities, material processing plants, transportation companies, and petroleum companies. They also work with small firms, consulting practices, universities, and government research labs. Specific assignments might involve research and development, design of equipment or systems, supervision of production, plant engineering, administration, sales engineering, the testing and evaluation of machines and entire plants.
Some mechanical engineering titles and their functions include: • Automotive engineer: Design parts for the automobile industry; solve transportation and safety problems by creating better and more efficient engines or by developing improved safety features.
• Biomedical engineer: Mechanical engineers work with a variety of medical professionals to design mobility aids, prosthetics, and artificial organs. • Nuclear engineer: Design nuclear power plants understanding the fundamentals of nuclear design; know how to operate the plant efficiently, and evaluate the environmental factors associated with nuclear plants.
