The M.Tech. in Structural Engineering programme at SGBIT was introduced in 2014-15 with an intake of 18 students, recognizing that a postgraduate programme would add value to the undergraduate Civil Engineering programme through enhanced human resources, better infrastructure, and advanced laboratory and library facilities.

The department is equipped with cutting-edge structural testing facilities including a Horizontal Shake Table (30 kg payload, 0–25 Hz, 1 HP motor), Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Apparatus, Rebound Hammer (NDT), and a CAD Lab with STAAD.Pro V8i and ETABS software for advanced structural modelling and design.

The programme is supported by the VTU Recognized Research Centre offering Ph.D. and M.Sc. (by Research) programmes. Graduates have achieved notable academic distinctions — including VTU rank holders in 2017-18 and 2018-19 — and go on to careers in structural design, government services, consulting, and advanced research.
